We raise registered Polled Herefords. During the grass growing season, our herd is grass fed by rotationally grazing 8 paddocks…rotating to a new paddock every 3-7 days depending on the speed the grass is growing and the number of paddocks in rotation. Occasionally we give them a treat of some hand-fed apples, and if I need to persuade them to do something (like enter a corral or move to a new paddock early in the season) I give them some USDA Organic ‘All Breed’ grain purchased from Conway Feeds in Conway, WA. They do not get grain regularly and are NOT grain finished. They are grass finished. We butcher when our grass stops growing. We do not use commercial fertilizers or other chemicals on our grass. We fertilize the pasture once a year using chicken manure from the local chicken farm. During the non-grass growing season we take the herd off the pasture for the health of the pasture and feed grass hay that we make during the summer.
